Seems like everywhere you go on the Internet there is a promo for IE8.
Wait!!!!! Don't download IE8 unless you have the time to install it, find out that it does not deliver on its promises and then uninstall it.
I tried IE8 for a few days hoping I could get it working correctly. That is, it claims it will speed up your session and provide more security. I found that most pages I looked at did not fully load or if they did it was very slowly and possibly with errors. The compatibility mode seems to be a placebo. There was no before and after difference discernible when surfing the Internet.
It seems Microsoft is continuing beta testing on us without calling it beta testing. How will we be able to know when IE8 is ready to use with the functionality Microsoft claims it has? It will be a while before I try it again. Will look for independent positive reviews from users before downloading.
When Googling for answers every registry cleaner asserts it will fix your IE8 problems. I had Max Registry Cleaner so I ran it. No improvement. Ran a test cleanup from the RegCure web site. RegCure claimed it found several hundred errors. In order to remove them you must purchase the program. Did that and it cost me $30. Ran it and fixed the errors. IE8 did not run any better. Too late, lesson learned (again).
One thing worked properly. I was able to uninstall IE8 and revert back to IE7. Please be aware that the uninstall procedure varies between XP and Vista. Fortunately I found help by Googling 'uninstall IE8'.
